The President's Gift

A sculpture dedicated to the missing people of Cyprus and those who have never finished their journey to "Ithaca".

A miniature of the bow of the ancient boat found on the seabed of Kyrenia in 1965, the sculpture serves as a reminder of the occupied areas of Cyprus It also represents the efforts and hopes of all Cypriots to return to the occupied areas. The pigeons, the birds of peace and an integral part of the flag of the Republic of Cyprus, are sculpted on the sail. They represent the refugees who left their houses but also the prisoners of war who came back free. The strings on the sail symbolize the prison bars and each letter belongs to every missing person.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Demetris Christofias, is giving this sculpture as a gift to other Presidents during his visits to other countries or during the visits of other Presidents to Cyprus. A bigger size of this sculpture decorates the Offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

LATEST NEWS FOR "OLYMPIC SPIRIT"

The sculpture that was distinguished in international competition of sculpture dedicated to the Olympic Games of Beijing 2008 continues its way to success.

Before one year, the director of an American editorial company announced to Philippos Yiapanis that the Chinese Posts are going to publish an album dedicated to the Olympic Games and that the sculpture "Olympic Spirit" was chosen by them as the best sculpture of the 110 "excellent works" of the competition to be displayed in this special publication.

Recently the album was circulated by the Chinese Posts and the Philotelic Company of China. Among photographs from the collection of the Olympic Museum of Lausanne, the "Olympic Spirit" of sculptor Philippos Yiapanis, is the only sculpture featured in the centre pages of the album. The sculpture symbolizes godess Athina with her hands raised and in one hand holds a pigeon the symbol of peace and in the other the Olympic circles. Simultaneously the hands in the form of scale symbolize the fair fight. The body of Athina is wrapped with olive tree leaves which was the reward for the winning athletes in the Olympic Games of ancient Greece.

The album is a unique and expensive publication, where you can find all the cities which held the Olympic games, starting with Athens in 1896 and leading to Beijing in 2008, with photographs from the stamps printed during the Olympic games by various countries but also with authentic stamps of first day circulation of Chinese Posts, dedicated to the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008.

The fact that the sculpture "Olympic Spirit" is the unique sculpture in the album, makes sculptor Philippos Yiapanis to feel proud for this great honor the Chinese Posts offered him.

A woman's figure which symbolizes Athena, the Greek Goddess. The olive leaves around her symbolize the hoop that was the prize for the winners of the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. The bird is the symbol of peace that came during the Olympic Games since every war that was in action at that period ceased until the end of the games.
